Equine Ultrasound
Connecticut Equine Clinic is pleased to offer ultrasound equipment to help with veterinary diagnoses.
When your horse isn’t feeling well, he or she cannot tell you why. Connecticut Equine Clinic knows what to look for and is equipped with the cutting-edge technology needed to diagnose your horse’s condition, even if the cause is not immediately apparent. Ultrasound is an important diagnostic tool because of its’ ability to show internal structures. It is a useful aid in diagnosing injuries, illnesses, pregnancies or reproductive health and, in some cases, to perform precise medical procedures.
Since its establishment in 1987, Connecticut Equine Clinic has a strong foundation and presence in the Coventry community.
Connecticut Equine Clinic is a progressive equine practice that provides ultrasound examinations to equine patients in our clinic and in the field.
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to non-invasively image soft tissue, and is more sensitive to soft tissue abnormalities than x-rays. A hand-held probe pressed against the horse’s body emits sound waves, which reflect back to the probe as they bounce off the internal body structure. These reflections create a dynamic digital image of the scanned structure. Ultrasound can help to better identify problems and understand the extent of many injuries, which will guide diagnosis, treatment, time off and prognosis. At Connecticut Equine Clinic we believe speed and accuracy in equine diagnostics is essential.
Catching and addressing a lameness problem early, when you first notice that something is not quite right, gives your horse a much better chance for a quick recovery.
If your horse is lame, getting a prompt diagnosis might mean the difference between a few days off or a few months. If the lameness is caused by a soft tissue injury, Connecticut Equine Clinic will often recommend an ultrasound. Our portable ultrasound allows us to perform these examinations in the field. Digital ultrasound allows us to diagnose and monitor soft tissue, such as tendons and ligaments. This, in turn, allows your horse to get started on a rehabilitation schedule sooner. Ultrasound can be used as a guide for therapeutic injections. In addition to imaging tendons and ligaments, we can also image joints, bone surfaces, cartilage, sacroiliac ligaments as well as the chest and abdomen. Ultrasound is helpful for locating and assessing tumors, diagnosing liver disease and detecting problems with the kidneys, heart and lungs. Ultrasound can also be used to assess for conditions including pneumonia, colic and other gastrointestinal abnormalities as well as umbilical infections in foals.
Connecticut Equine Clinic provides ultrasonography for many reasons including:
- Diagnosis of soft tissue injuries including muscular, vascular, tendon, tendon sheaths, ligament, joint capsule or bursal defects
- Adult and foal colic

- Assessment of fluid accumulation
- Masses (abscesses, tumors, foreign bodies)
